A busy October

The previous post showed the Flying Eagles attended the Wildlife Expo, but it did not stop there.
On October 19 we had a Pack meeting at Mills Elementary and it was Camping Night. Coleman outlet store came to sell items at a huge discount, hope all got what they needed. I did not but I know where the store is located and can always use more stuff. The Pack meeting was fun with three stations where the boys competed in sleeping bags roll relay, backpack relay and campfire sing-a-long. Fun night.
Yes we have been very busy. October 23rd, the den met at Kartz Preserve to ensure that the site was well policed of trash and general pickup. With gloves, trash bags and brooms in hand the boys and parents walked the preserve. After approximately an hour we had two bags of trash and the stairs near the Longhorn Cave was all swept down. The Cave Expo was going to be Saturday October 28. With this the boys all completed the Citizen belt loop and Activity badge, a required activity pin for Webelos.
On the 25th we all met again at the Manceaux household for our den meeting. The subject was going to start the work on the Fitness Activity pin. Darcy Folsom presented an outstanding presentation on the food pyramid. The boys were interactive and presented some good examples of items from the various levels of that pyramid. We also discussed the safety log which the boys started to fill out for emergency situations. The group got to sample a great salad made by Mrs. Folsom which included pine nuts, goat cheese with sesame seeds, pomegranate seeds and a wonderful dressing to put on the lettuce. Of course the boys also had pizza to go with that lovely salad. The boys also turned in their popcorn orders. Our popcorn volunteer coordinator, Edna Reyes, reported back that the boys sold 224 items for a den total of $3255. The big seller for the den was Tucker Folsom with $1803 in popcorn sales. Congratulations to all the boys for their contribution to the Pack.
Now Saturday October 27, the Flying Eagles all met at Blanco State Park for their official first camping trip away from homes this year. The park was just perfect. The whole den showed up and after all was situated, the boys were granted just free time for this camping trip. They choose fishing. The park had the Blanco river running right beside the park and fishing was free with no license required for those staying at the park. Fishing poles in hand and off they went with several fathers in tow. Nibbles and bites but nothing caught but all had a great time. Later on Jerry Folsom and Ken Manceaux got the boys together for some exercise and a small hike around the park. The boys came back with pockets full of pecans. The boys had made the menu which we were to all partake from for Dinner and Breakfast. We had cardboard oven pizzas. The boys made the pizzas and stuck them into the cardboard box ovens for the 10 minutes and sat down to eat. The adults decided that it would be nice to have some deep fried catfish and hushpuppies. Much thanks to Mike Reyes, it was great. After all was finished with fish and pizza, Christian McDonald went all out and cooked two dutch oven cobblers; one peach and the other blackberry. He even brought ice cream to go with it. I have never seen cobbler disappear so rapidly. I cannot believe the boys are still hungry. We even shared a little cobbler with some camping neighbors and nice conversation. Later while clean up was taking place, the boys sat around the campfire telling stories and doing skits. Smores?, of course there was smores. Do you think the boys would forget? I think we are in for some very full young men. Around 10 pm it was time to turn in, the temperatures were dropping and so were some of the boy's eyes. During the night the temperatures dropped more than I think all thought it would for being such a great day. Not only were the temperatures dropping but we got to experience the cold for an hour more since we set the clocks back to stop daylight savings time. In the morning it was coffee and hot chocolate for all. The breakfast assembly line started and it was bacon and pancakes for all. The boys must have had a very active night because they again ate a lot. It was free time for the boys while breakfast cleanup began. Later on Jerry Folsom took the boys to one of the campsites and they all practiced archery for about an hour. Now it was time to pack up and take down camp. After a complete walk through in all three campsites it was time for some to go and others to have a before lunch snack of fresh fruit, cheese and chips. It was a fabulous camping trip and one most will remember for awhile. Hopefully the snack kept the boys full until they got home for dinner.
October is ending but November is approaching rapidly. Just highlights of upcoming events are:
11 Nov is the Veteran's Day parade and 17-19 Nov is the Pack Campout and Pack meeting.
